Catherine Dawkins is a Complementary Therapist passionate about improving well-being and health naturally. Therapies are undertaken from a holistic perspective, which means understanding and treating the ‘whole’ person. Holistic treatments have many psychological and physical effects on the body and can help achieve balance with the mind, body and spirit. Before each treatment a confidential medical history will be taken to ensure the therapy is suitable for you and most importantly, tailored to your individual needs. She has previous Clinic experience, is professionally qualified and a member of the Affiliation of Ethical and Professional Therapists (AEPT).
Reflexology
Reflexology is based on the principle that the entire body is mirrored on the feet. It is a scientific art which links all body parts to specific reflex areas and by gently massaging these reflex points on the foot, it promotes balance and normalization of the body naturally.
Relaxation through reflexology can help the body to balance any kind of stress it is experiencing. Reflexology stimulates circulation and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all bodily cells. It can be beneficial for pain relief as endorphins are released into the bloodstream allowing inflammation to be reduced. Imbalances in the body can be detected and working these points can release blockages in order to restore energy flow and encourage healing. The main benefits of reflexology are:
Promotes relaxation - Improves the mood - Aids restful sleep - Relieves tension in the body - Promotes a sense of well-being - Encourages healing to relieve many conditions.
Reflexology in Cancer Care - As a complement to medical cancer care, reflexology can help symptoms. The first large-scale study led by Michigan State University and funded by America’s National Cancer Institute, followed 385 women having chemo or hormonal therapy for breast cancer. Those having reflexology reported significantly less shortness of breath and more energy to carry out everyday tasks.
I do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.
Maternity and Infertility Reflexology
Maternity - Reflexology aims to optimise the physical and emotional health of pregnant women through working on specific reflex points on the feet. The therapy can be safely used throughout pregnancy after a full medical history has been taken. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence from women who feel they have benefitted from reflexology during pregnancy and two recent studies have shown that it significantly reduced pain during labour, reduced the length of the first stage of labour and improved quality of sleep in post-natal women.
I have undertaken further studies in this area of reflexology. Please contact me for further details.
Infertility - Stress is a complex condition which affects almost all parts of the body in some way. There is evidence to suggest that it may affect fertility. Cortisol (a hormone released in response to stress) can reduce the production of two hormones vital to conception. Reflexology relaxes the nervous system and balances the hormonal system and as such it is thought to be an effective therapy for encouraging conception and a complementary therapy to medical fertility treatment. There is no evidence that reflexology interferes with medical treatments and if stress is reduced and wellbeing increased, then medical procedures will feel easier.
I have undertaken further studies and have a special interest in this area of reflexology. Please contact me for further details.
What to expect from a session
The session will begin with a consultation in which a medical history will be taken, so that the treatment given can be tailored to your individual needs. A relaxing foot spa will be offered during the consultation, which helps to relax and soften your feet prior to the treatment. You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and will be made comfortable on the massage couch. The session lasts from 45 minutes to an hour depending on your age and state of health. Relaxing music will be played. Some people think it will feel ticklish and uncomfortable, but most clients say it feels much better than they imagined and a deeply relaxing experience. If any areas of imbalance or congestion are found, you will be advised at the end of the session.
Swedish Massage
Also known as Holistic Massage this is a therapy which treats body, mind and spirit through the manipulation of the body’s soft tissues. It is commonly associated with relaxation but massage has many therapeutic benefits to offer:
Improves circulation - Detoxes the body - Boosts the Immune System - Releases tension in muscles - Relieves stiffness and pain - Relieves tension headaches - Calms the digestive system - Improves posture
Massage helps to relax the mind, reducing anxiety and promotes a feeling of general well-being leading to a more positive outlook and increased confidence and self-worth. Many techniques are used and these range from soothing strokes known as effluerage to invigorating movements known as frictions and tapotements and will be used according to your individual needs.
Hot Stone Massage
It is said that one stroke of the stone is equivalent to ten of the hand. This therapy has been used for thousands of years for balancing all levels of emotional, mental and physical energies. Volcanic in origin, lava stones are heated and massaged over the body. It is intensive energy work that enables relaxation and for many a reduction in stress levels. Hot stones increase the circulation and soften muscle fascia more deeply than traditional massage therapies and the benefits include;
Sedative effect on the nervous system - Relief of muscle tightness/pain - Lymphatic drainage - Boosts immune system - Calms digestive system - Alleviate swelling and reduces inflammation.
What to expect from a Massage Therapy session
The session will begin with a consultation in which a medical history will be taken, so that the treatment given can be tailored to your individual needs. This will help to determine exactly what you wish to get out of the session to ensure that it is successful for you.Your modesty will be respected at all times and you will be covered with a towel whilst particular areas are worked on. Soothing music will be played and the whole experience should be very relaxing and will help you feel balanced in body, mind and spirit. A course of massage treatments may be required depending on your needs and individual requirements.
Indian Head Massage
If you are suffering from back, neck, shoulder pain or frequent headaches, Indian Head Massage could really benefit you. Indian Head Massage is a therapeutic massage of the upper back, arms, neck, shoulders, head and face. It is effective for relieving tension that can cause pain and muscle tightness for example from hours at a computer desk. As well as being deeply relaxing, it can also revitalise you if you feel constantly tired and lack energy. The facial massage involves the massage of acupressure points on the face which enhance your well being and help you feel balanced.
Reduces mental fatigue - Improves circulation - Relaxes the scalp - Reduces tension and stiffness in neck, shoulders and upper back - Boosts Immune system - Promotes deep relaxation - Aids detoxification of the body - Improves concentration - Increases energy levels - Improved hair condition.
What to expect from a session
You will be asked to lie on your front to commence the treatment and the upper back, shoulders, arms, neck and head will be massaged using massage oil. Oils used on the hair are optional, but can really help to improve the condition of dry, damaged hair and a dry scalp. You will then be asked to turn over onto your front to receive the facial massage which concentrates on specific acupressure points.
Ear Candling
If you are suffering from head colds, hay fever, sinusitis, headaches, swimmers ear or excessive wax this treatment could really benefit you. The candles are made of cotton, beeswax and therapeutic oils. When placed in the ear the candle produces a light suction action and the movement of the flame creates a vibration of air in the candle, generating a massage-like effect on the eardrum. It induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It is soothing for earache, headache and sinus problems. The light suction action gently draws impurities to the surface and gradually softens and breaks up any earwax or mucus that may be blocking the tubes and sinuses within the ear and head. Using high quality, Biosun ear candles which comply with EC guidelines, you can be confident this therapy is safe and non-invasive.
What to expect from a session
You will be asked to lie down on the massage couch, the candle is placed in the ear and then lit. You will hear a pleasant crackling sound whilst the candle burns down. Once the other ear has been treated a facial massage will be carried out which aids the sinus drainage and you should feel very relaxed throughout the whole session. You don’t have to worry about anything falling in your ear as there is a plug to stop this. A few sessions may be advised depending on the reason for the treatment.
Please feel free to call or email if you would like anymore information about how the therapies could help you.
