About Dr. Emma Rae Rhead

I am an experienced psychotherapist and hypnotherapist working with adults living with persistent pain and its wider effects. I previously trained and practised as a medical doctor and have more than 25 years’ experience working one-to-one therapeutically.

Persistent pain can affect far more than pain itself, including sleep, confidence, activity, work, relationships and intimacy, independence and everyday life. It may also bring fear, frustration, uncertainty, loss and difficult changes in how you feel about yourself and your body.

My work combines psychotherapy with clinical hypnosis. I work individually rather than following a standard pain-management programme, taking time to understand each person’s experience, circumstances and what they would most like help with.

Therapy may focus directly on the experience of pain or on its wider effects, including sleep, fear and anxiety, confidence, loss and adjustment, relationships, or rebuilding parts of life that pain has disrupted.

I don’t assume that persistent or chronic pain has a single cause, or that pain should automatically be understood as psychological simply because it has continued. Psychotherapy and clinical hypnosis do not replace appropriate medical assessment or treatment.

My training, work experience and any achievement

I originally trained in medicine at the University of Liverpool, qualifying MBChB in 1994, and practised as a medical doctor for more than ten years before moving into full-time therapeutic practice. I also hold a BSc (Hons) in Medical Cell Biology.

I began professional training in psychotherapy and clinical hypnosis alongside my medical career and have now worked therapeutically with individuals for more than 25 years. My professional training includes psychotherapy, hypno-psychotherapy and clinical hypnosis.

I have undertaken further professional development specifically relevant to persistent pain, including pain education and cognitive behavioural approaches to pain, mindfulness-based approaches to pain, and advanced clinical hypnosis for pain. My wider professional development has also included Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and have previously served as an elected Council Member of its Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine Section.
