Are you seeking to resolve something? Perhaps ’Shane Ibbs Counselling’ can help you. My approach to counselling is refreshingly different. I use a compassionate, flexible and straightforward approach, with no psychobabble. I will share my insight and wide experience with you, gained from over 20 years of working with people ranging from adults to young children, including adolescents, couples and families from all walks of life. I have a passion for working with people and will use my skills and experience to help you, in finding a solution or an understanding to your situation. It will require you to do some searching within yourself, rather than others, to find answers. I understand that this is not always easy, however with time, it does produce positive results. Fundamentally it is only ourselves that we can change. With regard to children and adolescents the approach to my work is different. I am more consciously child/young person focussed, this requires a different skill set in that I am more mindful of the cognitive and emotional developmental changes through the years from child to adolescent.
I work as an Independent Counsellor in Private Practice, registered with BACP (the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and I share their code and ethics. Thereby giving you confidence that you can discuss your difficulties confidentially, in the knowledge that it will not be shared with others. Neither will it become part of your medical records. Whatever your reason for seeking counselling I will show you the respect and dignity that you deserve in a safe, relaxed and non-judgemental environment. I value whatever it is that you want to talk about, I do not have a set agenda and will work at your pace. However if you require a more structured approach to the sessions then I can provide this. I understand how difficult that first step is in meeting with a counsellor (I keep in mind my first time). However it is normally the first step to change. And I am continually reminded by my clients how positively powerful counselling can be in helping people make the right choices for themselves, in their lives and their relationships.
Quote; "For the first time we feel helped by someone with real understanding and insight for what our family has been through. Shane has really helped us to understand our situation and enabled us to deal with our family issues in a better way". (A couple’s experience)
Quote; " This is the first time I have felt really relaxed and talked about this stuff" (14 year old)
My experience has been gained in a variety of settings which have included; my own private practice, working as a counsellor for two large charties and in two specialist NHS clinic’s, in a Family Therapy service, and in a Hospice as a bereavement counsellor, where I gained a reputation for compassionate skilful work with children who have experienced a bereavement of someone close. I have a strong track record of helping people to make a difference in their lives. Although it is not always easy, I believe it is always possible to make a positive difference.
Childhood Abuse.
I have had considerable training and experience, in a variety of contexts, working with children and adults who have experienced either sexual, emotional or physical abuse. I treat this area with sensitivity, with me you will not have to discuss what you do not want to.
" I feel really safe with you, this is the only place I feel I can be my self ".
(21 year old female client).
Length of counselling.
Some people find that one or two sessions are enough to help them, some people come for between six to twelve sessions, others prefer and benefit from longer term work. We can discuss what might be most helpful. As part of my practice I will review with you along the way, how things are going.

Customer Reviews
We came as a couple to share the emotions of a traumatic situation we have gone through. Shane understood us straight away. We felt a sense of relief to be heard.
Shane has helped me through many different issues in my life, He has always been 100% supportive and has given me the tools to find the solutions to my problems myself, he has never once put me under pressure and always given me space to speak or not speak as i felt comfortable. My sessions with Shane have always given me stability even when the rest of my life has been difficult. Shane has always been understanding and never judgmental. He has helped me gain the confidence to do things I never believed I was either strong or smart enough to do.
I came to Shane because I felt totally invisible.
I had convinced myself that if I invested enough in others, then others would eventually invest in me. It never happened.
I ended up angry, repressed and resentful.
Shane was very supportive; he didn’t judge; he listened to, acknowledged and valued me as a person.
I realised that I’d been hiding myself away for a very long time.
Shane’s relaxed and positive counselling has nurtured my confidence so that I now feel ’allowed’ to take action and responsibility for my own happiness.
Life is so much easier and a lot more enjoyable now.
