About Marie Cairney
As a professionally qualified, Relate-trained relationship specialist, I help couples; families and individuals manage and enhance their relationships by improving communication and by helping them develop a better appreciation of their own and others’ relationship needs.
When facing relationship problems and crises, I work with my clients to resolve ongoing conflict, reach important decisions, and importantly; make desired changes.
Life can throw up problems that can affect even the strongest of relationships, often causing communication to breakdown just at a time when it is needed most. Working together, I support my clients in maintaining or developing a healthy relationship while these other problems are overcome.
I work confidentially and collaboratively with my clients and can work both on a short-term and long-term basis dependant on their needs.
My role is to actively enable my clients to realise self- knowledge and their own expertise to help solve problems.

How I work – theoretical approach: I am an integrative therapist in that I work both systemically with the familial, cultural and social circumstances of how problems emerge and how we communicate in relationships, and psycho-dynamically to identify some of the unconscious drivers that may be affecting how we form and maintain relationships, and how we face problems more generally. I work collaboratively with my clients and can work both on a short-term and long-term basis dependant on their needs. My role is to actively enable my clients to realise self- knowledge and their own expertise to help solve problems.
How I work – ethics and confidentiality: I work to the ethical framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and Association of Family Therapy (AFT) and have regular Criminal Records Bureau checks. I comply with data protection legislation and maintain the security of all client information. I would not normally share information from or about my clients except in very exceptional circumstances where there was good reason to be concerned about issues of safety, particularly if these related to a vulnerable individual. As an ethical practitioner, I receive regular supervision in accordance with BACP guidance, where client confidentiality is always maintained.
