About Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

For additional information see my website: www.cognitivebehaviourtherapybelfast.co.uk

I have been counselling individuals and groups since 2007 and count it a privilege to have
been in a position to observe people move from a place of distress or anxiety to a place where
they are fulfilling their potential in life.

In 2009 I qualified in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and now use this approach mainly.
CBT is a type of ’talking’ psychotherapy that research has continued to show to be effective
in the treatment of a wide range of difficulties. In fact, the National Institute for Clinical
Excellence (2011) recommends it as the first choice of treatment for Depression and Anxiety.

CBT is based on the idea that the way we feel is affected by our thoughts and beliefs
and how we behave. Individuals sometimes feel ’stuck’ in a particular way of thinking or
behaving and it can feel impossible to change. In sessions we aim to identify and change
these unhelpful, self defeating patterns of behaviour and thinking. I work with my clients
in a structured, solution focussed way to achieve agreed therapy goals. There are a variety of
proven strategies and interventions within the therapy that can help with a range of emotional
or mental difficulties.

Anyone can benefit from CBT. It is also a collaborative type of therapy where sessions
are enhanced by exercises and strategies the client can learn and use daily to help combat
dysfunctional thinking leading to low mood and anxiety. Essentially, you can learn to become
your own ’therapist’. The more a client can practise the strategies, the greater the long term
success of the therapy. Clients often feedback that they enjoy feeling ’in control’ again
and this type of counselling facilitates that sense of being able to ’cope’ and problem solve
effectively.

My training, work experience and any achievement

Psychology, BA Hons;
Cert. Person Centred Counselling;
Dip. Pastoral Ministry Training (Association of Christian Counsellors);
Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Therapy.

Experience:

As well as working one to one with clients from a wide range of backrounds on both a private
and voluntary basis, I have experience Lecturing in Psychology and Counselling across
different therapeutic approaches and Organisations including: University of Ulster, South
Eastern Regional College, Belfast Cognitive Therapy Centre and various community Groups.
I am an accredited tutor for the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body
(CPCAB).

I also develop specifically designed training and education packages for community
organisations and groups. Working as part of a team of established Christian Counsellors, I
recently helped integrate CBT strategies into a new programme for Faith Based Counselling
which was awarded by the United Millennium Award Scheme in 2011.
