I am a fully accredited Integrative and Humanistic Psychotherapist and I offer counselling and psychotherapy to adults. I also offer a range of play and attachment therapies to children, teenagers and families. I offer both short and long term therapy depending on what is being sought by way of support; this is discussed at the initial consultation and reviewed again at regular intervals.
I have been seeing clients through my private practice in South Belfast since 2003. Prior to that I worked extensively with vulnerable children, young people and families as a trained social worker since 1990. In recent years I have combined my private practice with work in the NHS, as a therapeutic practitioner in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (Belfast HSC Trust). I am now full time in Private Practice.
I trained in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin and am fully accredited with the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy, which is part of the Irish Council of Psychotherapy (the equivalent of UKCP registration body).
My approach is integrative, in that I am interested in the person and not just the ’problem’. In general, I view the ’presenting problems’ that bring people into therapy in the first place, as a form of communication - something like a distress signal - that needs to be properly listened to, in order to be understood. If we can really understand, with compassion, why we are suffering, I believe we can open the door to genuine healing.
All of my work involves face to face talking, listening and reflecting, and for many, offering space for this is all that they need. I encourage people to really listen and pay attention to themselves; their mind, their body, their feelings and in so doing discover something deeply trustworthy inside, their own authenticity.
I am also more recently trained in Play therapy, sandplay therapy, parent-child attachment based therapies (Dan Hughes and Theraplay) and trauma therapy (EMDR). I have found that these approaches offer exciting possibilities to support the process of exploration and healing. They can help to deepen the work and to explore the ’problem’ from another angle.
The play based approaches can be a particularly supportive and safe way to explore issues that feel too painful or frightening to address ’head on’. While it is particularly helpful with children, playful and creative approaches can easily be adapted to suit people all ages and can help us get in touch with positive childhood energy, which we may have lost touch with. It is also often good fun!
EMDR, is a recommended Trauma therapy which is particularly helpful in processing specific memories or troubling symptoms.
I can offer support to individuals of all ages, and also to families - particularly where there are problems in a child/parent relationship.
I am interested in supporting people to develop and deepen their connection to themselves and to others, and thereby enrich their lives. Sometimes this can involve re-visiting painful experiences in the recent or distant past. However, in so doing, we hope to bring healing and closure so that these experiences no longer continue to impact negatively with living in the present.
It is a joy and privilege to accompany and support people through their unfolding journeys, and I welcome any enquiries.
