Yogurt Can Ease Symptoms of Mental Health Disorder

Adding yogurt in your regular diet can be a simple yet effective way to combat mental health problems as the superfood contains probiotics that benefit your brain, according to new research.

In the new study, 64 per cent of adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and symptoms of depression saw their mental health improve within just six weeks of taking a daily ’good bacteria’, or probiotic, supplement. This is compared to just 32 per cent of patients noting an improvement after taking a placebo.

The study was carried out by researchers at McMaster University. They analysed 44 adults with IBS and mild-to-moderate anxiety or depression over 10 weeks. Half of participants were given a daily dose of a probiotic, known as Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001, while the others took a placebo. This probiotic is commonly found in yogurt and other fermented foods.

After 6 weeks, participants who received the probiotic had a reduced depression score by at least two points versus 32 per cent of those who took a placebo. There was also a reduction in the depression scores at 10 weeks and an overall improvement to quality of life among the probiotic group.

Looking at the participants MRI scans, the researchers found that the reduction in depression symptoms were due to the changes to the areas of our brain that regulate mood.

These findings provide, further evidence of the communication between our gut’s bacterial make-up and our brain, lead author Dr Premysl Bercik notes.

’This study shows that consumption of a specific probiotic can improve both gut symptoms and psychological issues in IBS.’ He adds that this does not only pave way towards treatments for IBS but also for but for primary psychiatric diseases.

The new research was published in the journal Gastroenterology.
