Sharon Moore September 22, 2016

As one enters the adult life, everything begins to change and we start to realise that there is much little time for everything. We spend eight hours or more at work, about two hours doing the household chores, four hours watching TV, and six to seven hours sleeping. This is a typical day for most people, especially the working population. And even our weekends aren’t spared from work. Some spend more time caching up on delayed projects, studying, and doing social media.

Despite the increase in the number of leaves given to employees in the UK, British workers getting the least amount of holiday entitlement. Why is it so? According to studies, because of the ‘challenging economic climate’, British workers are compelled to work longer hours and spend their rest days at work. Add the tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and the threatened job security.

But did you know that taking time off actually benefits not just your overall health but also your performance at work? It may sound counterproductive but it’s true. Working long hours put strain on your body. It causes spike in your stress levels, which in turn weaken your immune system. It also puts a strain on your relationship. Most likely, when you are stressed, you won’t have enough energy to play with your kids, go on a date with your hubby, or go out with friends.

Everybody needs a break. Here are some more benefits:

Your creativity will flare.

Working on a business plan? You need a little more inspiration. Instead of cracking your head trying to grasp ideas, why not take time off to unwind and relax? Gaze at mountains, have fun with the waves, camp out with friends. Taking time off allows your mind to get rid of stress and spike its creativity. You will be amazed of what comes to you.

You will discover yourself more.

Whether you are traveling abroad or just spending your holiday at home, taking time off lets you discover more about yourself, particularly what you really want in life. Taking a break allows you to step back and reflect on things going on in your life. Are you headed to the destination you’ve always wanted? Or are you taking a different path? Are you happy with your career at the moment? Or have you always thought about pursuing something else? These are things that you can answer only when you give yourself some time.

You will absolutely feel better and more inspired.

People who go on break get back to work fully recharged and ready to take on more challenges. Disconnecting from email, chats, and check-ins creates an opportunity to connect with yourself. This leaves you feeling energised the next day.

So go ahead and start planning your dream vacation. Don’t worry about work. You can always catch up once you get back.
