What You Can Do Daily to Avoid Stomach Problems
Everyone experiences stomach problems at one point or another. And it’s really annoying, and sometimes, debilitating. Stomach problems come in various kinds and among the most common are constipation, upset stomach, bloating and diarrhoea. They can affect your mood, your appetite, and even your work life.
But these stomach problems don’t have to beat your way. Here are some useful tips to help you avoid recurring stomach problems:
Get your daily dose of fibre.
Start your day with a cup of warm oatmeal. There’s no quicker way to fill your stomach in the morning than to prepare yourself some oatmeal. You can add some milk, nuts and fresh fruits to make it more flavourful and filling. While oats don’t contain some magic compound that cures upset stomach, it is very easy to digest and gives you a significant amount of fibre - the key nutrient for a healthy gut!
Go banana!
A banana a day can keep your GP away, especially when it comes to stomach issues. The vitamin B6 in banana helps curb acid reflux. Research shows that people whose diet contain more fruits and vegetables are less likely to suffer from acid reflux and other stomach problems.
Sleep on the left side.
As your stomach is located on the left side, it is recommended that you sleep on this side especially if you are experiencing acid reflux. Due to gravity, you will feel better and the acid in your stomach is less likely to go up to your oesophagus. Also, slightly elevate your head and shoulders to reduce acid reflux.
Keep hydrated.
Water is important for proper digestion. Track your fluid intake and make sure you are getting 8-10 glasses of water per day. Water allows smooth bowel movement. Drink more water when you are eating more than what you regularly consume and when you are drinking alcohol.
Lose excess weight.
If you always suffer from heartburn, aim for a healthy weight. Fats put pressure in your stomach, leading to heartburn.
Keep your stress level in check.
Stress can cause stomach issues, from upset stomach to constipation and diarrhoea. It can also worsen digestive conditions like stomach ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome. Avoid eating too much when you are hungry or anxious as your stomach may not be able to digest the food properly. Allow yourself to calm down and relax a bit before you dig in to your meal.
Remember that stomach problems can be prevented, relieved and even banished by simple lifestyle changes. By starting with these easy and useful tips, you’d go a long way towards keeping your stomach healthy!
