Tomato Fights Stomach Cancer, New Research Finds

Rebecca Lewis May 19, 2017

At the core of some of the most mouth-watering pasta dishes in the world are tomatoes. This popular Mediterranean fruit makes superb sauces too. But more than that, tomato is known for the antioxidant lycopene which has anticancer properties.

But if you think that it’s all what tomato has to offer, think again. According to the latest research, tomato inhibits cell growth when eaten in its entirety. This finding contradicts previous research suggesting that just one chemical, lycopene, has cancer-fighting benefits.

For the study, researchers analysed whole tomato extracts for their ability to tackle various features of gastric cancer. The extracts were taken from common tomato varieties like San Marzano and Corbarino.

Results show that both extracts affected cancer cells’ ability to spread and develop, as well as leading to their death.  These do not only imply prevention, but may also pave way to new treatments.

’Our results prompt further assessment of the potential use of specific nutrients not only in the cancer prevention setting but also as a supportive strategy along with conventional therapies.’ said Professor Antonio Giordano, lead author of the study.

The study was published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology.

Gastric cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the lining of the stomach. Age, diet, and stomach disease can affect the risk of developing gastric cancer. Symptoms of gastric cancer include indigestion and stomach discomfort or pain. Treatments depend on a person’s general health and how far the cancer has spread. Many cases of stomach cancer cannot be completely cured. However, it is possible to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life using chemotherapy and in some cases radiotherapy and surgery.

In the UK, this form of cancer is fairly uncommon, affecting around 7,000 people.
