The Not-so-known Qualities of the Mentally Strong
We all have pretty much the same idea as to what a mentally strong person looks like. Generally, the view is that the person who isn’t anxious, not suffering, able to deal with others well, or not having a diagnosis is considered to be mentally healthy.
But it’s not always the case.
Mentally strong people experience negative emotions too. But even though you may see them feeling sad, anxious, angry or low from time to time, mentally strong people have a few notable qualities that separate them from the rest. Below are the not-so-known qualities of the mentally strong. If you have these qualities, you have to be thankful!
Mentally strong people are self-aware.
People with healthy minds know themselves too well. They know what their strengths and weaknesses are. They know what triggers their negative emotions and how to handle them. They are aware of what they feel and when they are feeling it. They know what their needs are, what they want in life, what they don’t like, and things like that. A hallmark of mental health is being able to understand yourself. Self-awareness is a powerful tool that makes you a resilient person. And the more resilient you are, the better you are in handling difficult emotions.
They accept their imperfections.
Being comfortable with their skin is another quality that separates mentally strong people from the rest. They understand that they are unique in many ways. They may have flaws but they don’t take it as a big deal. Rather, they embrace their imperfections while striving to be a better version of themselves. Being able to accept yourself is the key to happiness. Being happy to being simply you can make a big difference in your life and bring more joy to your world.
They are willing to take risks.
It takes great courage to take risks in life. And it takes such a mentally strong person to do just that. Risks often go with fear. Fear of the uncertain. What if it doesn’t end well? What if it fails? The uncertainty that lies behind every challenge accepted can really keep us stuck from pursuing our dreams and goals in life. Risk-taking can be a difficult skill to master. But once it happens, you will be more than thankful. Start by taking small risks. Celebrate the achievements and learn from the mistakes. Life requires a lot of risk-taking. But at the end of it all, regardless of how far you’ve gone, you’d be happy about your journey.
They don’t mask their feelings.
Being mentally strong doesn’t mean being full-proof from experiencing negative emotions. Anger, anxiety, fear and loneliness are negative emotions that anyone can feel, at any time. It’s not the emotions that one experiences which define their mental state. It’s how they deal with these feelings. Mentally strong people are able to effectively manage their emotions, whether it’s great joy and delight or overwhelming sadness. Like risk-taking, emotional regulation can be a difficult skill to practice. But take it slowly and it will be one of your greatest tools against the challenges that await you.
