The Good Thing About Being Alone
There’s a great deal of difference between being alone and being lonely. The latter is bad for your mental health and increases your risk of depression and other mental disorders. On the other hand, and contrary to what many of us believe, the former is actually good for you and can even strengthen your mental health.
Being alone can have many advantages. Here are some of them.
Being alone gives you time for yourself.
How many hours each day do you spend working, making other people happy, and trying to meet their expectations? How many hours do you really spend savouring your thoughts and imaginations and doing what you really like? While socialisation is important, you also want to ensure that you are able to connect with yourself at a deeper level. And you can do this by spending some time alone.
It fuels your creativity.
Have you ever experienced the ‘aha’ moment while taking a stroll around the neighbourhood or perhaps traveling alone? There’s really a wonder in being alone – it gives you a great opportunity to think, reflect, and fuel your creativity. Sometimes, the answers to your biggest questions and problems are just within you. But because we spend most of our time doing our daily chores at work and at home, we get to think less. It’s fun. Yes, spending some time alone can be fun too! You get to sing out loud without anyone telling you to shut up, dance with the beat of your favourite music, dress up, laugh, do pretty much anything you want without the fear of others judging you. It’s a great opportunity to have quality time with your inner self and just be you.
It boosts your concentration and productivity.
Working on a big project? You may consider spending more time alone. When you remove as many distractions and interruptions as you can, you get better at concentrating. And that helps you do more in less time without sacrificing the quality of your work.
Solitude strengthens your relationship others.
There’s a popular song that goes like this “even lovers need a holiday…far away from each other”. By spending time with yourself and understanding who you are and what you really want, you are able to make better decisions as to who you want to be around. You also learn to appreciate your relationships more as you spent some time alone.
It helps you unwind and recharge.
Spending time alone gives your brain a chance to rest and recharge. It helps clear your mind, regain your focus, and think more clearly.
In this constantly connected world we’re living today, finding solitude has gotten less attention and value. But being alone can actually be a healthy thing. Hope the benefits listed here can encourage you to enjoy solitude as a crucial part of your everyday life.
