Sustainable Habits that Make You Fitter and Better

Rebecca Lewis June 13, 2017

Eat well and get active. These are the magic habits we should all be adopting right now. But just like what they say – it’s easier said than done. Because if it is, then obesity, diabetes and heart disease will not be at their highest rates right now.

Fortunately, there’s an easier path to health and wellness. Here are habits that you can easily adopt and sustain, and could motivate you to change your life completely:

Walk more.

Walking is the simplest form of exercise which you can do. Ditching your car may be the hardest thing to do especially if you go to work every day. Fortunately, you don’t have to do that. By simply parking your car at least a 10-minute walking distance away from your workplace can be a great strategy to insert more walking time in your daily lifestyle.

Go to bed early.

You’ve probably heard about this so many times. No health article doesn’t mention of sleep as an important habit. Improving your sleep cycle is much easier than you think. The key is to go to bed early. Be clever about naps. And avoid caffeine intake late in the afternoon.

Ditch emotional eating.

Eating can be pleasurable. That is why many people resort to food for comfort. Unfortunately, this habit can backfire and prevent you from achieving your health and wellness goals. Change your emotional connection to food. Instead of perceiving food as a source of comfort, perceive it as a source of nutrients that your mind and body needs to function well every day.

Prioritise stress management.

Managing stress is as important as exercising and eating well. But you have to go with the right and proper way of coping with stress. Many people tend to overeat, drink, smoke and engage in other unhealthy activities as a way to beat stress. While they are able to survive the day, the health consequences of their stress-coping strategies backfire and seriously damage their health in the long run. Exercising and sleeping are great stress busters. But you can always consult a mental health therapist for more tips.

Love the colour green.

Adding more greens to your plate is equivalent to adding more years to your life. Vegetables are always the best source of essential nutrients that your mind and body need. Don’t last a day without having your vegies. It’s a great idea to prepare your own food and depend less on takeaways. This way, you are able to focus on healthier options.

Have fun.

Fun is essential to a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle. If you take things too seriously, you get older faster. You also look older than your actual age. Don’t let the ‘child’ in you fade away. Give time for leisure and enjoyment. Your body will thank you!

By beginning with these health habits, you are making a big step towards a healthier and fitter ‘you’.
