One in 3 Brits Don’t Get Enough Rest, Study Finds

Spending long hours at work can be benefiting your career. But it could be hurting your health, nonetheless. New research involving 13 countries found that 37 per cent of Britons don’t get enough rest. Plus, two in five Britons report they were so tired that they had no energy left to exercise.

Next to UK are US and Canada (both on 31 per cent), which suggests that those in the English-speaking West have a particular problem with ignoring their time in the office.

The most well-rested country was India, where fewer than one in ten said they were not getting enough sleep. Next were China and Indonesia, wherein 10 per cent and 16 per cent of the respondents complained, respectively.

Among European countries, Italy scores the highest in sleep quality. Thanks to their riposos (afternoon naps) and passegiatas (evening stroll) which all help a lot in keeping them well-rested.

‘Our fast-paced lives in the UK factor in little time for rest and relaxation, while our working culture encourages long hours, both in the office and at home.’ says Doug Wright, the medical director of insurer Aviva, which carried out the research.

‘Taking time off is discouraged, while the days of taking a full hour’s lunch break are long gone. We’re also famously bad at relaxing during our downtime.

He said it is important to make sleep a priority. ‘Insufficient sleep can lead to a host of mental and physical health problems, so shouldn’t be seen as insignificant in comparison to work or play.’

The researchers believe that long hours and ’meagre’ lunch breaks are the reason behind sleeping problems.

Lack of sleep is widely linked to many health problems, ranging from diabetes to heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Health experts recommend prioritising sleep to promote good health, physically and mentally.
