Morning Sickness and its Severe Form - Hypermesis Gravidarum

Some pregnant women in their early pregnancy suffer from nausea and vomiting which make the early months of pregnancy a misery for them. Many clinical research trials indicated that acupuncture can reduce these symptoms (of nausea and vomiting) with improvement of health status in pregnancy.

Acupuncture uses needling of various acu-points on the forearm or abdomen, particularly the acupuncture point p6 (pericardium acupuncture point) with great success in reducing the severity as well as the frequency of these symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Morning sickness varies greatly in its duration and severity and so that’s why the name is misleading - this disorder is not confined to the mornings, but can occur at any time of day and last from few minutes to several hours.

In Western Medicine, the main concern by doctors as well as mothers is the side effects of medication on foetus on using them for treatment of morning sickness.  On contrary, the Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is not only useful for reducing pain and discomfort in variety of afflictions during pregnancy but also safe, healthy, and natural therapy for such conditions. The best advantage of acupuncture in pregnancy is that it will not negatively affect the baby’s health or development, unlike the possible side effects of some Western medication. The combination of a healthy diet and acupuncture treatment sessions can help pregnant women to reach their goals of a healthy baby and a smooth pregnancy.

How does Acupuncture work for treatment of morning sickness?

According to the Traditional Chines Medicine, acupuncture works by balancing the body hormones through a mechanism of increasing the good feeling natural hormone (endorphin) levels. Such natural hormones make the patient feels better especially pregnant women with morning sickness who may have a different experience of nausea- whether it is worse when she eats, dependant on what foods she eats, or whether she has a bad taste in her mouth and how is the severity and frequency of that nausea and vomiting. Most women with morning sickness feel much better to tolerate food and bad smells following a course of acupuncture treatments.

How many acupuncture treatment sessions a patient with morning sickness may need?

The response to acupuncture treatment may vary from patient to patient. In certain cases of a pregnant patient with morning sickness, she may only need two treatments to feel better while others need to have regular treatment sessions for a month before they maintain a good lasting effect. In majority of cases, the successful acupuncture treatment for nausea is administered twice a week sessions for at least 2-6weeks.

Does acupuncture needling hurt?

It is usually known that acupuncture is hardly ever an uncomfortable experience if administered by a skilful and experienced acupuncturist.

Especially when a patient is feeling sick and puny, the skilful acupuncturist will take even more care and using very gentle methods in needling techniques. Women are always pleasantly surprised to find that they can barely feel the needles at all and feel refreshed and relaxed after the treatment.
