Tropical fruits like pineapple and grapefruit are known to work well for weight loss. Now, scientists have added another superfood to the list and swear by its benefits it preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Scientists at Oklahoma State University have found that mangoes may prevent the loss of specific bacteria in the intestinal tract may play a role in obesity and obesity-related complications, such as type 2 diabetes.

’Mango is a good source of fibre and has been reported in previous studies to have anti-obesogenic, hypoglycaemic and immunomodulatory properties,’ said Professor Edralin Lucas, one of the researchers. While their study was conducted in mice, the results showed that mangoes help regulate gut health and levels of beneficial bacteria levels.

Mango has previously been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and is a good source of fibre. Now scientists believe it can help prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes.

This adds to a growing body of evidence the tropical fruit, which is native to southern Asia, has various health-boosting properties. Studies also found compounds in mango exhibit anti-inflammatory activities with its high fibre-content aiding digestion.

High in Antioxidants

Did you know that mangoes are high in antioxidants too? This delicious fruit contains over 20 vitamins and minerals, including beta-carotene. And since one mango has 100% of the daily need for vitamin C, it helps keep your immune system functioning well too.

Health benefits associated with mango consumption include reduced risk of macular degeneration (one mango contains 25% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin A), lower risk of colon cancer, and improvement in digestive and bone health. It was also shown to promote healthy skin and hair. It helps alkalise your body too. The tartaric acid, malic acid, and a trace of citric acid found in the tropical fruit help to maintain the alkali reserve of the body.
