Holistic Therapies for People with Chronic Pain Conditions

Sharon Moore October 13, 2016

Chronic pain affects one in 7 people in the UK. It is a greatly debilitating condition which could have varying causes. People who suffer from chronic pain are more likely unable to carry out their daily activities, have dietary and mobility restrictions, and undergo a great deal of medical treatments. They are also more likely to develop mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Understanding chronic pain is essentially a difficult job even for medical professionals. While often, its underlying cause is diagnosed early, sometimes it isn’t. In cases like this, patients had to undergo therapies that help them manage their condition.

While medications may provide immediate relief, it’s only temporary. What’s more, these drugs come with side effects.

The good news is that there are natural therapies that work well in alleviating chronic pain. They include the following:

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy provides a good deal of benefits to everyone. But it is specifically helpful to those who suffer from mild to chronic pain. In palliative care, therapists are trained to relieve pain through light touches, instead of deep tissue work. The aim is to provide comfort and soothe anxiety in the patient.

Therapeutic Touch

This is another a way of using your hands to help patients deal with their pain and recover from illnesses. It is different from most forms of massage therapy, and is based on the concept of open energy systems. This concept suggests that every human is an open energy system composed of layers of energy that are in constant interaction with self, others, and the environment. Practitioners of touch therapy believe that illness is a result of imbalance in a person’s energy field, and that everyone has natural abilities to heal and enhance the healing in others.

Music Therapy

Music heals. Music is widely used as a therapy especially for people who have pain issues. This therapy is a science-based complementary intervention which seeks to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals through music. Studies have shown that music therapy can improve respiratory conditions, and lower blood pressure and heart rate.

Acupuncture

This therapy works best in easing stress and pain associated with certain health conditions. During this treatment, very thin needles are lightly inserted into the skin. It is believed that doing so stimulates natural chemicals in your body called endorphins that block pain signals. For those who are afraid of ‘needles’, there is a similar therapy that uses manual pressure instead. Proponents of the said treatment (called acupressure) believe that the body has certain pressure points that promote pain relief and physical wellness.

Alongside these holistic therapies, chronic pain can be best addressed with changes in one’s diet. Foods that fight inflammation, such as vegetables and fish, are recommended. Regular exercise as well as sufficient rest and sleep are also necessary.
