Five Natural Ways to Speed up Post Surgery Recovery

Rebecca Lewis March 14, 2017

Surgery is a major medical treatment in which a doctor cuts into someone’s body in order to repair or remove damaged or diseased tissue or organ. And while the cut may seem to have healed on the surface of the skin, it can take some time, or a long time, for the wound inside to heal. Surgery is a painful process and can be debilitating if the patient isn’t careful enough.

Very often, prescription medications are given to surgery patients to deal with the pain and discomfort. But even though they are helpful, they can come with potentially harmful side effects. Thankfully, there are natural steps that are proven to be as better, if not more effective than medications in speeding up post-surgery recovery. Here they are:

Improve your immune system.

There are many reasons why you feel weak and exhausted after surgery. Not only because of the painful cut, the nutritional reserve of your body also gets depleted during the operation, especially as you receive general anaesthesia. This, along with antibiotics, and post-surgery CAT scans and X-rays can weaken your immune system by decreasing your store of antioxidants. There are many ways to boost your immune system. They include eating nutritionally dense foods like fruits and vegetables, and taking in some herbal medications, of course with the guidance of a health professional.

Watch your calorie intake.

Surgery can cause so much changes in your body. For some people, digesting processed foods is more difficult a few weeks after surgery. You may also have a problem with nausea and a decreased appetite. To help your body recover faster, you should eat lighter than normal. You also want to avoid foods that increase inflammation like fatty and sugary meals.

Go with natural painkillers.

There are plenty of safe natural remedies for post-surgery pain. Chamomile, an herbal anti-inflammatory agent that helps reduce swelling and pain. Ginseng, is traditionally thought to boost the immune system and combat post-op stress. Ginkgo biloba increases healing success in surgical reconstruction, garlic assists the liver with detoxification, and milk thistle protects the liver and helps detoxifying after surgery. Always inform your GP about the herbal supplements you are taking.

Exercise

You should also try gentle exercise to speed up your post-surgery recovery. But before you do, you should talk to your GP first to learn your limitations and have them write out specific exercises that you are able to do. Opt for low impact exercises, such as walking. Do not push yourself to your limits during recovery as it may only worsen your condition.

Up your probiotic intake.

You are most likely recommended with antibiotics after surgery. But while these drugs fight bad bacteria, they also destroy the good ones. To counter this, add more probiotics in your diet. Foods like yogurt, kimchi, and other fermented products contain good bacteria that boost your immune system.
