Fatty Foods that Are Actually Good for You

Amy Taylor January 24, 2017

Fats – they are tasty but most of us despise them. We fear them and we try to avoid them. We blame fats for our bulging waistline and declining health. This is why for the past years, getting rid of fats in one’s diet has become a major concern. ‘Fats’ became a negative word and fewer people appreciate it.

But ask any health expert and they will tell you the same thing – fats aren’t the sole culprit. And not all fats are bad. Believe it or not, our body needs fats to survive and stay healthy.

What we should be giving concern to is the type of fats we consume. If there’s such thing as ‘bad fats’, there’s also the ‘good fats’. And below are some of them:

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines and halibut are a great source of omega-three fatty acids that are good for the brain and heart. They are also a good source of other important acids like EPA and DHA. The good fats found in fatty fish have been shown to help reduce inflammation – a risk factor for many diseases.

Avocado

This fruit was once avoided by dieters because of its high calorie and fat content. But research has shown that despite being high in calories, avocado boasts of having high quality fats, particularly monounsaturated fats that are greatly beneficial to the body. Consuming avocado has been scientifically proven to lower “bad” cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels, which are both risk factors for heart disease.

Nuts

Like avocados, many dieters used to hate nuts because of their high-calorie content. But one study suggests that the unsaturated fats in nuts help reduce the risk of developing heart disease by 30 per cent, as well as stroke and diabetes by 50 per cent.

Dark Chocolate

Unlike regular chocolates, dark chocolates are super nutritious and are perfect guilt-free snack for any dieter. One study found that dieters who consumed dark chocolate during the study period had lower BMI than those who didn’t. In addition to its antioxidant and fat-reducing benefits, dark chocolate also boasts of anti-aging properties.

Olive Oil

There’s a reason why olive oil is a crucial part of the Mediterranean diet. Apart from having good fats, olive oil also contains compounds that have anti-ageing properties.

Eggs

The fact that eggs are rich in omega-3 fatty acids make them a superfood. Eggs are also a great source of high-quality protein for people who are in a vegetarian diet.

See? Not all fats are created equal. Some are bad for your health, but some are definitely good for you. Enjoy more of these fats and have a better, healthier life!
