Exercising Alone is Not Enough to Lose Weight, Experts Say
Exercising but not following a healthy may not help you lose or even just maintain your weight, according to new research. This means that lack of physical activity, alone, is not the reason for the rising rate of obesity in the world, scientists claim.
The study was carried out by researchers from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. It involved data of over 1,900 people in the US, Ghana, South Africa, Jamaica and the Seychelles. The researchers found that the amount of time people spent exercising per week didn’t seem to play a role in how well those people controlled their weight. They note that it is equally important to look at what people are eating in figuring out the causes of obesity.
In fact, those who exercised more than others in the study actually gained weight over the two-year study period, while some of those who exercised less than others lost weight over the same period. This suggests that physical activity alone is not enough to prevent weight gain.
They also found that some of the people who met the physical activity guidelines at the beginning of the study were more likely to gain weight than those who did not meet the guidelines. For instance, men in the US who met the guidelines gained a half pound per year, on average, whereas those who did not meet the guidelines actually lost about the same amount per year. This is not typical though, as most people usually gain weight over time.
But they emphasised that the results of the study certainly don’t mean that people should stop exercising. Exercise has so many great benefits, including low risk of heart disease, diabetes, mental illness, and other chronic diseases. On top it all, exercise is linked to longer life.
