Eight Foods for Your Liver

Lisa Franchi May 23, 2017

Your liver plays a valuable role in your body. It filters the blood to ensure that chemicals and other toxins are flushed out. It also works with other organs to promote proper digestion and make sure that your body receives the nutrients you get from food. When the liver does not function properly, numerous symptoms start to develop. Furthermore, toxins in your body pile up, weakening your immune system and increasing inflammation.

That is why it is very much important that you take care of your liver. How? One great way is to ensure that you’re having a balanced diet. Below are the foods to eat to promote liver health:

Spinach and other leafy veggies

Leafy greens are among the best foods for liver. Most of them can be eaten raw, cooked, or juiced. Since they are extremely high in chlorophyll, leafy greens help detoxify your blood so not much work is left to your liver to do. Chlorophyll is able to neutralise heavy metals, chemicals, and pesticides – a powerful protective mechanism for your liver.

Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower are great for your liver too. They are an excellent source of glucosinolate – a compound that supports enzyme production in the liver. Such natural enzymes flush out carcinogens and other toxins from the body, and fight the onset of cancer.

Turmeric

You’ve probably heard about this superfood a hundred of times. And it’s more than a hype. Turmeric boasts of its powerful detoxifying ability and natural enzyme production. Try adding this golden spice in some of your favourite dish and let it do wonders not just in your liver but in all your other bodily organs.

Apples

Apple also makes it easier for your liver to cleanse and flush toxins from your body. The reason lies behind the powerful antioxidant ‘pectin’.

Beets and Carrots

These crops are extremely high in flavonoids and beta-carotene which all support overall liver function. Add them in your salad dish for a nutrient-dense twist.

Garlic

This popular spice, which you probably have every day in your kitchen, activates liver enzymes that help your body flush out toxins. It also contains large amounts of allicin and selenium –  two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing.

Grapefruit

Citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges, limes, and lemons aid the liver in its cleaning function. They help flush out carcinogens and other toxins that can significantly harm your body.

Green Tea

Make it a habit to drink green tea too for your liver. It has plant-based antioxidants known as catechins that assist liver function. Research suggests green tea extract may actually have a negative effect on liver health.
