Britons are Living Longer but Getting Unhappier, Survey Reports
New research suggests that people in the UK live longer and are healthier than ever before. But they are more anxious, stressed and lonely too, according to a national survey.
In the said survey carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Britons were asked about everything from their health and well-being to personal relationships, personal finance and the elections. Of the 41 areas they were asked about, 10 had shown improvement in the last 12 months, but four had declined and more than half have stayed the same.
Some of the survey questions include:
- · Overall, how satisfied are you with your life nowadays?
- · To what extent do you feel the things you do in your life are worthwhile?
- · How happy did you feel yesterday?
- · How anxious did you feel yesterday?
- · How much can you rely on your spouse or partner if you have a serious problem?
- · Rate your relationship between ’extremely unhappy’ to ’perfect’
People were asked to respond on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is ’not at all’ and 10 is ’completely’.
Each year, the scores have improved and researchers linked them to improvements in the economy. Crime rates have also fallen and people report that they felt safer as they walked at home at night.
But while people are living for longer and generally consider themselves healthier, the number of people feeling stressed and anxious have both risen. They also reported feeling unhappier in relationships and lonelier than ever with many saying they didn’t have family or friends to rely of in times of need.
Results showed that approximately 41 per cent of men had very low levels of anxiety compared to 39 per cent of women. Meanwhile, 21 per cent of women had high levels of anxiety compared to just 17 per cent of men.
Women reported higher life satisfaction and worthwhile levels when compared with men in the last financial year.
In 2012 there was a statistically significant difference in happiness ratings between the sexes, with women reporting higher ’happy yesterday’ levels. But by the same time this year, there was no longer a difference between the happiness ratings of men and women.
