5 Life Lessons Every Grownup Should Know

Amy Taylor October 10, 2016

Many young people dream about being a grownup soon because it entails freedom to do pretty much anything they want - enter into relationships, live independently, earn, and so on. Being a grownup is never an easy thing. Living independently has all its ups and downs, and it can be too stressful most of the time.

Here are some important life lessons that every grownup must know to be able to succeed and be happier:

What other people say doesn’t always matter.

Many of us live based on what others expect from us. Family and society’s expectations make us think that there are things we should do and shouldn’t do. This belief confines us in a suffocating world and prevents us from pursuing our true passion in life. Living your life the way you exactly want is the key to happiness. Yes you may be successful and rich doing something you don’t like. But you will never be happy. Identify what you want and who you want to be in the future. And work on achieving it. Remember that happiness is not a destination. It’s the journey.

Rest is important.

Just because you spend most of your time in the office doesn’t mean you are being productive. You are not a robot. The older you get, the more rest you need. Your body is the most precious gift that God gave to you. You have to take care of it. Prioritise your health and wellness. Rest. Take a break.

Face your fears.

We all have fears. But these fears shouldn’t stop us from living our life to the fullest. You have to remember that many of your fears are just a product of your mind. They don’t actually exist. By the time you realise it, you’d find that doing things that scare you will actually become easier.

Be thankful.

Being grateful is a very simple yet powerful habit that every grownup should practice. Adulthood can have so many complexities. Relationships can get frustrating and tormenting. Working can weaken you mentally and physically. Not earning enough can be so disappointing. Gratitude is your weapon against all the hard blows you receive in life. When you are grateful, challenges and failures are easier to deal with. Appreciate what you have. Because gratitude and appreciation is the true key to happiness.

Be mindful.

In this ever-so-busy world, it can be difficult to embrace the present moment and enjoy life as it is. Most grownups seem to be caught up with thoughts of the past and worries of the future. But you have to keep in mind that happiness can only exist in the present moment. You can’t do anything to undo the past. You can’t predict what will happen in the future. All you have control over is the present moment. Try stopping and look around you. Notice your surroundings. Feel your body. Be mindful of where you are right now. Be aware of your breathing. This practice makes you appreciate life much better. It also makes you feel like time is no longer slipping away.
