4 Secrets to Feel More Positive

Rebecca Lewis November 04, 2016

We all struggle with negative thoughts from time to time. But if you feel like the negative thoughts outnumber positive thoughts in your head almost all the time, then you should take it as a warning sign that something might be wrong.

Dealing with negativity can be tough. But there are things you can do to overcome it.

Understand where it’s coming from.

The first step towards feeling more positive is understanding where your negativity comes from. You may feel like you’re in the bad mood for no reason at all. But there is, actually. There should be. Many people choose to ignore their negative feelings thinking that they will go away. But if you ignore them for a long time, they could backfire and develop into a mental problem, such as anxiety disorder or depression. Give yourself time to understand where the negativity is coming from. It can be a good practice to make a journal and write down your thoughts. Your negative feelings might be coming from various sources, such as your dislike or discontentment in your current job, your emotional disconnect with your parents, dissatisfaction with your personal relationships, stress, or lack of ‘me time’. It is easier to address your negative thoughts and feelings if you understand where they are coming from.

Cultivate gratefulness.

Gratefulness is one of the keys to happiness. Gratefulness has such a powerful impact on your mental health that it can eliminate negative thoughts and emotions and boost positive feelings. It can be a struggle at first but as you incorporate this value in your life, everything will feel magical. To develop gratefulness, here’s a simple exercise you can do every day - before you go to bed, write down five things that you are thankful for. It doesn’t have to be a big accomplishment or anything extravagant. It can be small things, like getting a lovely text message from a friend, coming to the office earlier than usual, or enjoying a hearty breakfast.

Connect with others.

You are a social being. That means you are hardwired to connect and interact with other people. Don’t isolate yourself. Rather, spend more quality time with the people you love - your friends and family. Also, allow yourself to meet new people. You can learn a lot through simple conversations with your peers at work or in school. And when you socialise, try to make it in-person and not through social media. Nothing beats the joy of face-to-face interaction.

Make exercise a habit.

Working out is a great antidote to negative feelings, including stress and anxiety. So you may want to make it a part of your daily lifestyle. You need not train like athletes do. You need not spend hours in the gym either. At least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity would be enough to reap the amazing benefits of exercise. Take your dog out for a morning walk, take on swimming lessons, experience hiking with friends, learn martial arts, start a home garden project, or join a yoga class - all these count as exercise.

Share these secrets to your friends and family and spread positivity around!
