3 Things that Make the Best Diet for Weight Loss

Lisa Franchi November 07, 2016

What makes the best diet for weight loss? You’ve probably asked yourself about this a hundred times. Run a quick search on Google and you’d get thousands of results - all saying that this or that is the best diet programme in the world.

But experts from across the world agree on one thing: the best diet for weight loss is one which you can actually stick to - not for one week or one month, but forever.

Sustainability

Several studies suggest that it is the sustainability of a diet approach that is most important when it comes to losing weight effectively. For instance, in 2014, researchers from the University of Toronto found that the best diet is the one that people can adhere to over the long term. Meanwhile, another study reported in JAMA found that those who stick to their diet, no matter the type, lost significantly more weight. This means that a person’s ability to stick to a diet plays a more vital role in determining weight loss success than the type of diet they choose.

Furthermore, researchers from the University of California found that even after losing weight, between one- and two-thirds of dieters tend to gain back more than they originally had lost after reaching the ‘finish line’.

What makes a sustainable diet?

When it comes to weight loss, there’s no diet that fits all. It is better if you experiment on various diet plans to know what works for you in the long term. Here are three things you should always check:

It should be healthy. A healthy diet is one that has variety. It isn’t focused on just one type of food or drink. You’ve probably heard about diet plans that make you eat nothing but some type of juice, or eat soup all week long. You might lose weight excessively after a few days, but it’s nearly impossible that you can continue with that approach for more than a week. You might just end up having nutrient deficiency if you do so.

It allows you to adjust and make small changes. A good diet is one that allows you to make small yet significant changes in your usual diet until you are able to transition into a ‘healthier’ lifestyle. For instance, if you are a meat lover, you need not give up meat abruptly. Rather, you can slowly reduce your usual portion size, choose leaner cuts, pair your dish with some greens, and add other healthy foods in your daily diet.

It’s about positive eating habits. A diet plan should not turn you into an emotional eater. It should not stress you out or overwhelm you that you would already develop anxiety or eating disorder. The best diet is one that is built on healthy eating habits. It allows you to develop ways to combat binge eating triggers, emotional eating and mindless eating, and making healthy food choices. A diet shouldn’t be something that you would feel required to do every day. It must be something you can develop into a lifestyle. Only then you will be able to maintain a healthy weight for good.

Based on these guide, do you think you’ve found that best diet for you?
