- How to Choose a Good Therapist -
Don’t know how to choose a therapist?
Many people know that they want help but don’t know who to turn to or how to choose from all the practices and practitioners advertising on the web and in the directories.
I believe that what matters most in therapy is the relationship between client and therapist. Research consistently confirms this simple fact.
However a good therapist is at what he does, it won’t work for you unless you feel safe, valued and understood. It is also true that we are all different and the person I click with may not be the person you click with. So no one else can choose your therapist for you. Others can tell you what worked for them but you have to decide for yourself if it is going to work for you.
You don’t have to know a lot about all the hundreds of different approaches and skills. You should certainly check if the person is qualified and experienced. But when you come to choose between all the various qualified practitioners it is most important to know who you feel you can trust. Who listens to you? Who makes you feel that they genuinely accept and respect you? Who can put themselves in your shoes? Who can explain their approach in a way that makes sense to you?
So when you are looking for a therapist, don’t be afraid to ring round, ask a few questions, listen to their voices, consider how relaxed you feel talking to them, and listen to your own gut feelings. Trust your instincts.
You may feel an instant rapport or you may need a little time to decide on the person who is right for you. That’s OK. It is all part of taking responsibility for the change you are going to bring about in your life. You have already decided to go on a therapeutic journey and choosing your travelling companion is the next most important decision. It may be a smooth ride but it may be quite bumpy and scary at times so make sure you have the right person at your side. Good luck.
