Top 5 Vitamins Essential for a Healthy Brain

By Alex VanDyke on January 25, 2012

If you keep forgetting things and have a history of memory lapses, then perhaps your brain needs more than your regular exercise and diet program. You need sufficient “oil” to allow your brain’s machinery to operate smoothly and effectively. You need vitamins for your brain health.

Whether you are forgetting things because of old age, or you are a student having trouble memorising your lectures, brain health is vital for your body’s general condition and well- being.  Just like an engine needing clean, pure oil to be able to function well, your brain needs - not only proper nutrition - but appropriate vitamins as well.

Vitamins are necessary brain supplements which are vital for normal growth and development. It is usually required in small quantities. Since the body cannot supply the vitamins it needs, you should ensure that you include vitamin-rich foods in your diet.

Although vitamins are supplemental parts of your diet, their major role in your brain function is essential for the body’s physiologic, physical and emotional functions.

The following are essential vitamins for your brain health:

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 or cyanocobalamin is necessary for your brain’s proper function. It helps in the formation of the myelin sheath, which protects your neuron or brain cells.  It comes from meat, eggs, animal products, and liver.

Vitamin B6

Also called pyridoxine, Vitamin B6 is also one type of vitamin B which is needed for brain health.  It comes from nuts, vegetables, bananas, and meat.

Vitamin B9

Vitamin B9 or folic acid has the function of carrying carbon groups within the cells. Its food sources are green leafy vegetables, cereals, whole bread and liver.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C or ascorbic is also an antioxidant, which helps the body get rid of toxic substances from your system. You can derive vitamin C from fruits, especially the citrus fruits, and vegetables.

Vitamin E

This is also called tocopherol and functions as an antioxidant in the body. Antioxidants are required for proper brain function because they help in excreting these harmful substances to ensure normal body and brain function. Vitamin E comes from vegetables and fruits, which are significant foods for brain health.

These vitamins are also crucial in biochemical and physiological reactions in your body which would lead to a healthy body, consequently, a healthy brain.

Tips in using vitamins

Take in only the prescribed dosage

Overdose of these vitamins would be detrimental to your health resulting to minor or major health problems

Use natural sources like fruits and vegetables

Couple it with proper nutrition

Vitamins would not be totally effective if you lack exercise

If you want to buy manufactured vitamins, be sure that the company is legitimate

Select the most natural and effective product for your brain supplement

Couple your vitamin intake with a healthy lifestyle

You would need vitamins most especially when you are growing old because your body could no longer be sharp and nimble like when you were younger. Avoiding substances of abuse, alcohol and cigarette is a requirement for your vitamins to be readily absorbed and used reliably. Chronic alcoholism prevents the absorption of Vitamin B resulting to malnutrition, so beware of these detrimental vices that could muddle your brain permanently and could even cause death.

Having an excellent brain health is important for a healthy body. You may want to use this information to select your appropriate brain supplement. Remember, “You are what you eat.”
